This character doesn’t have to share all of your favorite hobbies, it can just be one and only one.
If your MC enjoys fishing and you also enjoy fishing and other things, that is a great way to get us started.
So, the main, supporting, or minor characters don’t need to have a bunch of hobbies in common with your own. Just one and that’s fine.
But…
If your character DOES NOT share ANY hobbies with you and has their own hobbies that they enjoy, list those down? If the character has none at all, list down what they do instead of leisure time.
I don’t share any hobbies with my characters, but here are some of the things they like to do:
• going to plays, operas, ballets, concerts
• going to parties, balls and masquerades
• target shooting with pistols
• fishing, hunting
• cricket and other sports
• playing battledore, croquet and other games
• horse racing
• prize fights
• gambling houses, playing cards
• going to brothels
My MCs hobbies include sleeping, drinking, eating, fighting, making music, fixing things and yes, I ripped myself off in those books when it comes to hobbies . I think that if you have something in common with your characters, its a good starting point to learn something about them. Not in a self insert way at all, just something to connect you.
Pinti’s best friend Kirlan likes drawing, although his is more to keep record of birds he sees and to keep physical reminders of memories. My reason is just to have fun drawing silly or cute things.
