I found a lot of inspiration from the Russian monarchy and was doing research on Ivan the Terrible (and the start of the Romanov name), which isn’t weird in and of itself–but what WAS fascinating was this tidbit, after Ivan had died and the heir apparent wasn’t, well, apparent.
Apparently, some Swedish man decided to lie and say he was Ivan’s son, Dmitry, whom had been assassinated as a child. He said that his mother and nanny had faked his death to avoid drawing the ire of any of Ivan’s enemies, and the child whom had died in his place was some random peasant they’d forced to play the role.
He used Dmitry’s identity to gain support and ascend the throne. And he did. I forget how long he sat the throne, but somehow the people supporting him found out he was a Swedish liar and not Dmitry so these people killed him AND PUT HIS BODY IN A CANON, FIRING HIM IN THE DIRECTION OF SWEDEN.
Bonkers.
Also arrow wounds and the process of healing them. Apparently, they used to put actual fat into arrow wounds when the arrow tip was stuck inside and wouldn’t come out, in order to lubricate it forth. Most of the time, though, people died from arrow wounds (and infection brought upon by archaic treatment) and/or suffered from pretty severe muscle/tendon issues after healing.
the same drug (eg alcohol or weed) can affect each alter in a DID system differently DID systems. sometimes the child alters/littles decide to front exclusively when people are under their influence. so that’s a fun time. also sexual protectors get even more sexual under the influence of alcohol to the annoyance of other system members. and in general switching is more pronounced and frequent.
however, if one alter is addicted to alcohol, the others are too since it’s on a neuological level.
yeah, crazy, right? it’s because alcohol physically changes your brain so any change that’s physical in the brain is refected upon all the alters.
also fun fact about DID: switching can be detected on brain scans. if you put someone into an fMRI (the scan that measures brain function) you will see different brain areas active in different ways for different alters.
i knew about the brain scans things actually - no clue what rabbit hole i fell down to learn about it though. the brain is kinda alien-like when we think about it!
