Strange Things You've Had to Research for Your Writing

:joy: are you perhaps descended from Carthage?

Conveniently I also learned the semi-answer to this.

So there’s not really a one-size-fits-all belief system in Mesopotamia at the time of the Sumerians but they did have a death cult (cult in this case having neutral connotations rather than negative). In this belief system all deceased became ghosts known as Etemmu and Etemmus need food, drink, conversation, ect. Therefore a member of the Etemmu’s family is given the responsibility of taking care of the Etemmu. A well-cared for Etemmu could potentially be called upon for healing, a neglected Etemmu could cause bad luck/illness/financial problems/ect. to the family.

Haha funnily enough, the world I’m writing takes place in Mesopotamian-inspired afterlife and all the characters are ghosts ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Turns out there are several types. But I found the one I was after

Omg, I know the Tiberius River! :open_mouth: Don’t know how I didn’t think of it. I’ve also heard of Lake Trasimene, not in English but in Japanese from when I was in school :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you so much for the information!

Now that I see “Tiberius”, I see that my intuition was right and the rivers had names like the people with “us” at the end. I suspected it would be the case

I thought so  How’s it been going?

Oh wow :joy: Talk about coincident

Neat! I don’t remember learning about Trasimene in school, but it was a long time ago that we cover Rome XD

No problem! I love getting to be a nerd in public

Yeah, that’s very common in Latin.

Okay, while I have you captured, I have a few other questions. If you don’t have any of these answers, that’s totally fine. I just thought I’d try

Do you know what kind of food they cooked? Not just around the wealthy people, but with lower class people. What did they eat?

And, what did they do in their past time? What were the adults doing? Where there any toys that children played with?

Also, what kind of religious practices were the lower class people doing? (going to church, praying, fasting, etc.)

Were there any odd cultural trends people seemed to have enjoyed?

So, the setting of my story is taking inspiration from the Roman Empire and giving it magical twists. All I need are some interesting, niche, and oddly specific tidbits about the Roman Empire that you’d only learn about if it was your specialty.

Hmm, I’m most familiar with pre-empire Rome and it’s war strategies right now. But I can ask my classics professors on Monday and my religions professor on Tuesday and get back to you.

I don’t know the answers to your questions, but maybe a useful area of research might be Pompeii? a lot of things were preserved under the lava, I remember reading some stuff about the food, but I don’t remember what exactly. looking it up briefly, I found this: Thermopolium - Wikipedia

Roman snack bar, who would’ve thought

Oh no, it’s okay. I don’t want to be a bother. It’s not something that I definitely need to find out. I thought I’d ask in case you know off the top of your head, but if you don’t, it’s okay. Thank you for the offer though
