Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 1)

Pare it down as far as you can and hand it over to someone who can make editing suggestions for chipping away at the unnecessary, that way you have to argue to keep things?

@Kamiccola @J.L.O Thank you! I’ll try to do both and see what happens with this!

OMG!!! I want to scream!

Write your backstories, friends! They open doors!

I was thinking over the ending I’ve planned for my villain story which is a backstory to a series. I wasn’t 100% happy with what I planned. There would be a compromise, a deal made that would give my villain her immortality back in exchange for a favor and it just felt like it wasn’t enough of a burden. I wanted to make the deal confine her in some way - be more like a punishment or something.

And I finally, got it. What if it’s not actually in the other goddess’s power to give immortality? So she offers to trade Merlin’s immortality after he fulfills his role. After all, he has been very tired of immortal life. So he’ll welcome death. And so my villain agrees.

Meanwhile in the main series, in book 3 Merlin will finally fullfil his destiny. He’s been looking forward to that for 1500 years. He can finally age and die, except he’s found a new reason to stay immortal! But my villain will come to collect. Boss battle between Merlin and a mortal goddess! And I know already what has to happen for Merlin to win, what he has to do. But will he? And what will happen to her if he does?

Actually, this boss battle might turn into book 4. Who knows. I’ll be writing this thing for years.

OMG!!! I’ve got the ending to this entire series at last!

I had to read it over and I am understanding it a bit.
I am going to look at this again since I copy and paste (sorry) and try it for myself in my writing.

If you want to see more examples

Can I give you my example of free indirect style to see if I really understand it?

Damn, my thumb is hurting still. I am hoping to do writing tomorrow though, because I am pretty much done with reading and finished watching figure skating for this weekend. Fingers crossed!

Go for it.

Hmm…let’s see now. I hope this works.

Gloria pictured everything the same way her mother would. Her mother would have told her that she is being overly cautious than her. Still, Gloria can picture how things have changed gradually between her and her family. Cautious or not, Gloria felt that seeing everything like some picture would make things better. Her mother knows that to be true.

Bah! I give up on that!
Can you create a better example than the one I gave? Mine lack sense and sounds pretty stupid.

Well, if you’re going for free indirect, you did it.
I would change a few spots for clarity and style sake and fix the tenses.

Are you serious? I did?

I really freaking did free indirect style?

No flippin way! I thought it was utter garbage and I did it wrong.

Thank you so very much.

No problem. I think lots of writers use this style unknowingly.
