Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 1)

Forgive my stupidity, but when you say writing sprints, is that when you write for a few minutes or hour nonstop like you’re sprinting or something?

Oh, you’re fine! You got it  You try to write as much as you can in a set amount of time, and then you share your word count afterward with whomever you sprinted with. It’s a fun casual competition and usually helps me get out of my writer’s blocks.

Wow…I had a massive brain fart moment of sorts right there.

I’ve seen people do writing sprints on YouTube. How could I forget that? LOL!

Well, finally finished a fair edit of To Make a Kinder Children’s Tale. Now I get to put the thing up, somewhere…and figure out what genre it is enough to put it in…

Oh, good going! I need to get inspired to edit too!

Editing is pulling teeth. I swear, I’m not built for it. Lol

Now, formatting to get it on to WP, instead of the way I’ve had it saved for years? That won’t take long, thankfully.

Then I get to do the dedication and what little asthetic I plan on doing: really more to show what started this story.

Basically, I decided to finish the chapters I left out first, just high level edits for content changes, so I have the full manuscript, then I will print it out and start applying changes from individual comments. I don’t want to swing back to the beginning right now.

I won’t upload any changes until I have final draft I like. Once I do, I will mass-upload and stop workshopping the story.

Hmmm. I’m rethinking the goal I made for this month.

I was supposed to finish the backstory. I’m very close to that. It’s time for the finale, but now I’m thinking to hold off and go back to the main story because the little details that cleared up while I was writing the backstory will affect the main story. So I think it’s time to go back there, ensure that timeline matches with this one as far as character state of mind. Because that might affect the backstory too.

Then I’ll go back to do the finale of the backstory and then I can continue writing the finale of the main story.

Why do I make things so complicated for myself? Can’t I ever write a simple story?

Unrelated rant (A different universe).

Ever since I’ve met my coworker, I’ve always thought he’d make an awesome book character. He’s just such a… character. :joy: And I always feared I wouldn’t be able to write someone as distinct as him. His mind works in such strange ways.

And right now, I just imagined him as my character Jasper. HE WOULD MAKE AN AWESOME JASPER!

Jasper is an Incubus (a lust demon), he’s full of innuendos, gives everyone nicknames, and you can’t quite tell if he’s trustworthy.

Add to that my coworker’s character and omg, I’m dying. The best Jasper in the world.

Now that I said it, I was thinking, I already have a good idea of what Jasper is like, but there’s another character I didn’t get to develop as much - Sander. I imagined him as annoying but fun. Not too much besides that. Maybe my coworker character would make Sander more interesting? He is after all annoying but very entertaining nonetheless.
Hmmm.

The problem is, now I can’t turn it off, I already picture Jasper. I wouldn’t want to create two too-similar characters.

This is fun - casting real people as your characters. Now, would I tell my coworker who I made him into?

Yup, it’s hard to integrate the changes, but I figure, nobody is holding the stop watch, so I am going to work on it for as long as it pleases me…

Exactly. Sometimes you just have to allow yourself to take as much time as it takes.

And enjoy it too!

haven’t done one of these in ages but:

. Edited one book and finished the 3rd draft about 2 weeks ago now. One down!

. Started editing another book a few days after that and am now on chapter 13/27 - but I have a lot of work to do to the end, so I might end up with more chapters. But I’m actually enjoying this one so far. Just been so busy with book clubs and real life shenanigans to sit down and spent a lot of time editing.

. Finished a draft a week ago! So I’m working on one WIP and waiting for ONC prompts. I have a few ideas in line, but one I really want to work on, so who knows. Still unsure as to whether I’ll enter but it’ll get be working so I’m not complaining.

. Slightly unrelated, but I watched Encanto with the son yesterday and rewatched it again today. IM OBSESSED AND I WANT TO TALK ABOUT BRUNO (if you know you know) It makes me want to write an angsty fanfiction, and I hate fanfiction.

. Got a message this afternoon from Wattpad Story Undiscovered amb page - they’re featuring one of my books in February! Soooo excited. Hopefully it’ll kick the reads up again as they’ve been stale lately. :crossed_fingers:

. I need to get back to writing :eyes:

We can’t all write Dick and Jane stories. M’god, I’d go nuts if I wrote See Jane Run.

Stories are as complicated as the writer, there isn’t much way to get around that.

If you do, explain that you already had the character, but that it was flat without his flare. Gives you some distance because of what the character is.

I mean, the best parts are pulled from people all the time. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read something to my husband and looked at him and gone, “you know you’d do that, too.”

This. This is what makes it so you don’t need a really stiff drink.

:joy: Let’s leave it at that.

I’ve used my son as inspiration for whenever I have a hyper character. Though as now he’s older (13), his ADHD is much more controlled. Or maybe I’ve grown too used to it that I don’t notice anymore.

Just the other day, we were in the kitchen talking, and after a good few minutes, I realized that he’d been bouncing himself from one kitchen counter to the other the entire time. And that looked absolutely normal to me, I’m so used to that. He was completely unaware he was doing it as well until I pointed it out.

I just imagined writing that as a character trait. Omg, that would be received so badly. Is that how the world sees him?

thank you so much!! <3 Keeping my head down and just plowing through XD I have so much to edit :stuck_out_tongue:
