Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 1)

That sucks. Hopefully you’ll get it back.

Our Netflix was stolen (just found out yesterday). Someone changed the email address on file. It looked like a disposable email too so not sure how they were using it.
Thankfully we were able to recover it.
At least Netflix still has a number to call about this.

Sorry, I just need to take it off my chest somewhere. Here is what I have in terms of projects. It’s insane.

RADISH:

She Kills Elephants and Men (just editing, in pre-release, aiming for 1 chapter a day edited after I finish editing first 27 chapters). Will repost on Wattpad once it fully unlocks on Radish, so spring 2023 or something.
Jilted by the Mafia – about half way in, on hiatus to finish Fireman’s Girl, but foresee no problems finishing given time

WATTPAD:

The Fireman’s Girl: 17 drafted chapters, full outline, full steam ahead. :white_check_mark:

POTENTIALS:

Champion in Love: I have 23K ONC (Maximus) that didn’t Shortlist, need to convert into 50K+ story, rework some lore.
Tender Assassin I have 2 chapters posted, have prelim outline and needs revisions, plus it’s my only gxg and I want to write a gxg so effing bad. It’s Ukrainian ancient lore based, so I am concerned that current politics may impact it
Played by the Mafia I have a small bit written, outline half-done, recently had a bit of a break-through on outline, still not enough for 50K words, but it’s a direct sequel for Trapped readers have been waiting for forever and a day, ignoring both Raised by the Mafia and Jilted by it.
My Date with the Prince of the Vampires have chapter 1 and the outline, but need work on the outline to make it more fun/stronger
An Inch of True Happiness have outline, some sketches. Its strength is that it’s historical and I had been successful in Regency. But it’s ‘dramatized’ 1950s in the States, so… not so sure I will have the audience back
The Dissident Alpha have outline, it’s the book 3 on Walkwe trilogy nobody wants

Prospectors and Love Unreal – in various stages of outlining with first couple of chapters each. There is no other reasons for them to exist except I love the concepts and characters so much.

First, I want to applaud you. Draft FIVE! I’m still on draft 2 of one book haha that’s awesome that your story has evolved/improved so much, and you were able to stick with it. And now you’re aiming for a sequel too. I think that’s cool. :sunglasses:

I think if you avoid editing, because you already have a solid plot/plan for book 2, you can achieve a first draft. Or at the very least, enough of it so when NaNo ends, you have enough writing to work with/continue. You can do iiiit! :muscle:

I went off the rails and am writing some fanfic ideas that were in my head. They’re more parody than anything too serious, so it’s nice to have a break?

Done editing chapter 5 of my second draft, was going to start chapter 6 next with a flashback? I know people normally hate those? In the first draft, I have a handful of chapters that go back in the past of one character (not the two main ones involved in an eventual romance) and his scenes go forward in time until the present where basically all the stories connect, and he enters to play his role. I feel like for people who want to read the romance, and are already into these other two characters, the chapters for this third character could be annoying? So this time I’m seeing if I can insert bits and pieces of the third character’s past without necessarily removing the other characters from a chapter. Like he’s remembering something in the middle of a scene that takes place in the present? Is that less annoying?

I’m gonna rant for a moment (this rant isn’t directed at anyone here btw, it’s ranted at the publishing houses, bookish social media, and some of the readers).

From all my researching, and upon watching a lot of BookTube content, how they consume books, and how the market works:

I think that honestly [almost] plotless novels are the way to go sometimes if you wanna rake in the cash. :joy: Look at the current trends. Look at how popular that dumpster fire of a novel The Spanish Love Deception became. Look at half the novels coming out now. It seems like one wants to self-actualize anymore, to be honest.

No one has an attention span, and most of the YA/NA crew are obsessed with identity politics, and they seem to go against anything that doesn’t hold their views. The most important form of diversity is missing. The diversity of thought. Cultural diversity is great, and so is ethnic, religious, gender and sexual diversity, etc, but what’s the point of it all if it’s not unique, different, or challenging the norms, and offering a fresh perspective?

When I write something, I want to make it at least half interesting, bring a unique perspective to things and step away from solely thinking about popularity. The chances are that once your book has its moment, no one is gonna care much about it afterward. Why not take your time and write something that people will remember, and get more than just plot satisfaction from?

There are so many stories out there that are underrated and need a boost too. The publishing houses haven’t given them a fair shot because they diverge from the norm, and aren’t marketable for BookTube or agenda-ridden enough. And aren’t nice, simple reads or are “too diverse” (yes, that’s a thing).

The industry doesn’t give a lot of people a look in because they don’t fit into or tick off the boxes and it’s very frustrating and unfair to them. People can be closed-minded, and it sucks. If more people gave different books a chance, things would be a lot better and fairer but alas they don’t.

The publishing industry needs to change, and not bar people who are different.

Honestly, that’s why we have Wattpad. I mean, it’s bad news for me that people want plotless. I love my plots!

There is no correct way to finish a novel.

I suggest hammering out your first draft and then going back to edit it, and do a second and a third draft. The first draft will be the skeleton, the second the organs, and the third the skin. It will be fleshed out by then, and all the plot points will be hit by then.

YOU CAN have fun with it, and wing it out based on your outline, but please remember that this is your first draft and it can have mistakes. You’re getting the feel for the story at this point. Just finish it. GO for it. NO AUTHOR SUBMITS A FIRST DRAFT, remember that.

Good luck, and keep it up.

Yeah, I agree but even there, a lot of the popular stuff is the same. You have to really push your own content on there if you don’t have a lot of views. And fair enough, if you like plots. You do you. You shouldn’t be punished for that.

Aw, that’s too bad

Still, it seems like you put a lot of effort into your account and growing a following is good even if it’s not translating into a lot of reads right now. It’s better than nothing.

it’s, mm, interesting. The bathrooms are on a separate alarm system because of how often people set things on fire in there and there are like three security guards on the main floor alone  but it’s quieter than a coffeeshop and a nice change of scenery.

:pen: :open_book: do some writing, pastry!

Wow, arsonist-proof bathrooms? :open_mouth:

Your library has floors? FLOORS? WTF? Mine is small and no security lol.

:sob: I know! I know! I know! I don’t know what story to start next?!

That’s a lot to choose between.

You could work with nostalgia triggers, to get that to be a bit more seamless.

Like seeing the other two canoodling reminds the 3rd of a canoodle that got interrupted by the plot you’re trying to write, make very clear that this is a to b to c…the other end could be them waking the 3rd because he’s not focused enough and they’re ready to move on.

more like addict-resistant bathrooms.

yiii, it’s the downtown branch in a city. It has two floors and a basement, and it needs security because there’s a really high, um… troubled population so they frequently have to deal with stuff like aggressive patrons and people OD’ing. And burning things in the bathrooms.

pick from a hat?

I planned on getting back into writing some time during this week or thereabouts, and I’m realizing just how invasive my boy is. I may not get much done this year. Oy.

That’s :frowning: sad kinda.

Oof. Wow.

Put all 10 ideas in a generator?
