I’m gonna rant for a moment (this rant isn’t directed at anyone here btw, it’s ranted at the publishing houses, bookish social media, and some of the readers).
From all my researching, and upon watching a lot of BookTube content, how they consume books, and how the market works:
I think that honestly [almost] plotless novels are the way to go sometimes if you wanna rake in the cash.
Look at the current trends. Look at how popular that dumpster fire of a novel The Spanish Love Deception became. Look at half the novels coming out now. It seems like one wants to self-actualize anymore, to be honest.
No one has an attention span, and most of the YA/NA crew are obsessed with identity politics, and they seem to go against anything that doesn’t hold their views. The most important form of diversity is missing. The diversity of thought. Cultural diversity is great, and so is ethnic, religious, gender and sexual diversity, etc, but what’s the point of it all if it’s not unique, different, or challenging the norms, and offering a fresh perspective?
When I write something, I want to make it at least half interesting, bring a unique perspective to things and step away from solely thinking about popularity. The chances are that once your book has its moment, no one is gonna care much about it afterward. Why not take your time and write something that people will remember, and get more than just plot satisfaction from?
There are so many stories out there that are underrated and need a boost too. The publishing houses haven’t given them a fair shot because they diverge from the norm, and aren’t marketable for BookTube or agenda-ridden enough. And aren’t nice, simple reads or are “too diverse” (yes, that’s a thing).
The industry doesn’t give a lot of people a look in because they don’t fit into or tick off the boxes and it’s very frustrating and unfair to them. People can be closed-minded, and it sucks. If more people gave different books a chance, things would be a lot better and fairer but alas they don’t.
The publishing industry needs to change, and not bar people who are different.
