Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 1)

If you want to come out of it armed for these arguments, see if you can pinpoint Bella’s personality.

Perhaps you didn’t, but I feel like that has been implied several times in this discussion. People don’t read the right things or they don’t read it in the right way. And I just don’t think anything productive will come from that (worst case scenario, you will scare people off from reading altogether).

Full disclosure, I haven’t read Catcher in the Rye… (it wasn’t really considered culturally relevant for the curriculum in my country I guess, although I do believe it’s translated). I also haven’t read Harry Potter (I considered myself way too mature to read about kids and magic when I first heard about those books, I was like 12 :joy: )

Fun stuff like that, I wish I could immediately give you an answer, but it would be months until I manage to finish Chandler, let alone start Twilight. By then, nobody would even remember this banter. Oh, well. Sometimes i wish I could start a ‘what do we really think of…’ reading group, but no time for that.

I’m definitely familiar with this, and it’s the reason I’m not planning to do anything with SLB outside of Wattpad currently (like querying or self-publishing). Because women should apparently only write about being women (although those stories will then be critiqued for being too indulgent).

Thing is, writing and publishing are not a meritocracy, as much as people may want that to be true. Longevity doesn’t equal quality. Shakespeare may have been a great writer, but who says there weren’t also great female writers in his time, who are now long forgotten.

Absolute truth. In every era that women got access to education, pen and paper (or equivalents) they wrote. Because, it’s in human nature to express thoughts. One of the saddest stories out there was that it was Cicero’s daughter, not sons who inherited his talent. He was destroyed emotionally when she died trying to birth the obligatory 3 children while contemporary Roman society believed her education was what overtaxed her making pregnancies’ difficult.

It’s one of the things I like about the overseas mission I deal with. I have the option to specifically fund charity that goes towards women learning how to read.

I’m in my usual state. Wanna write, still at work. Dammit!

My usual state as well :anguished:

And then when I do get home, I have a million other things I need to do instead.

I did manage to jot together a chapter of my GOT fanfiction trilogy today though, which I picked up as I have trouble deciding what to write. So I figured I could just as well make some progress on this neglected project.

I did a bit of editing, and I am apparently adding words as I go when I edit, because initially part 1 of my story was 28K, but it already sits at 35K even without 4 last chapters. So, I am guessing, it would be a hearty 40K by the end. Good thing Radish has seasons.

Okay, low count for today on the Fireman’s Girl, but it’s the start of Act 3 and a completely new scene, so I will take it. almost got to 42K.

I’m feeling quite happy to finally be back in the groove of writing my fanfiction trilogy, because while I want to focus on original stories it would also pain me to leave a series unfinished part-way through the third book  .

The only downpoint is that this story seems to be getting no reader comments these days, so I don’t know how the chapters land (which is also quite freeing in a way, because I can butcher the original lore how I want with not a soul around to complain). But I may need to write some SLB-related stories as well, to get the comment-fueled ego boost I need :joy:

Well, looking at what I have written, it’s only got 10ish chapters into the second part. I’ll probably get 10 more, so rough estimate of 3OK words? 3rd part will be roughly that, as well, so I’m thinking I’ll end up at 130K. (jeez) probably about 25K more to write of it, then it’s seeing if anything can be simplified, to oare it down some. Yeesh.

I’ve just totally had to tear myself away from my writing by the scurf of my neck because I need to work! It was flowing so well and I am doing all these really fun scenes full of drama with only one of them worrying me in terms of ‘dunno what I am even gonna write there’ because well, it’s out of everyday experiences and I am afraid to mess it up. But, ah. Have to work! Dammit.

Okay, I need to get up early tomorrow, but I was on a writing streak. I don’t regret it.

Anyway, I decided to do something I don’t normally do—have a character that is not the main character make a huge mistake that actually affects the main plot.

Alfie really did it. He really messed up. Basically gave the bad guys powers.

I got an invite to the Creators programme…
Crazy. I’d given up hope as I’d hit the threshold with 2 books, but hadn’t yet been invited.
Here we are! Looking to be a good month. May this good luck extend to the shortlist of Wattys fingers crossed
