Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 2)

I thought i finished all the character files for my “nano” project (we’re gonna call it a nano project even though i’ve been at it for a while) today. But now, hours later, I have remembered a random note I sequestered in my notes app that would be really fun to apply to one of the bounty hunter characters, but unfortunately means I would have to redesign his backstory and personality and relationships.

But it will be worth it, I think. iam just tired and unmotivated to write.

i also completely forgot to include ‘personality’ in all the character files :,)

I wrote a short-short story. It’s been a while, but I feel good about it.

I decided to write a character from Between Roses who dies offscreen. Since his story isn’t told in Between Roses, it’s not a spoiler. Also got to shove in another character that only comes out in name.

So, that was what she’d done to my kerchief. Elevin chuckled. This morning Marcie came to him saying she’d washed his handkerchief and added something special. She always looked out for him. It didn’t matter she was a pig maiden and he was a human soldier.

Here we have Elevin, Ten of Hearts and Marcie Pig Maiden.

Sooooo I slightly tweaked one of my important battle scenes. May have slightly screwed it over. Hopefully I can bullshit my way out of this one otherwise we’re gonna have a problem  this is what I get for seeing my plot as “optional”

Good news! I got myself out of it :joy:

Wrote some more for Chapter 11, think it’s nearing the middle point! (For the chapter, I’m guessing it’ll take another 10k ~ 20k for the actual middle of the story :skull:)

Omg I finally figured it out! It’s taken so long to come to me I could cry. I’ve been thinking about what I’m proven to be good at; narrative academic writing.

So my novel’s going to be presented as a narrative history of the end of the world. It’s non-linear and the events of the book are going to be interspersed with vignettes which will include essays, lectures, journals, and short stories about other characters/ events/ concepts (or even non-characters i.e. a crow observing the daily rituals of humans). I’m designing the vignettes in a way that will culminate into huge revelations for the finale — so hopefully these little departures from the “plot” will be rewarding.

It’s stretching the idea of a “novel”, which I think is very exciting. It’s not exactly a fragmentary novel, and not exactly historical fiction. Maybe a combination of both with academic precision and certain philosophical leanings.

The task now is to determine how accessible I want the writing to be. My influences are Olga Tokarczuk, Simon Schama and Joan Didion — the language they all use is very readable. But lately I’ve been enjoying Mathias Enard, who writes long, complex sentences with dizzying brilliance. And since I’m aiming for erudition, shouldn’t my sentences reflect that too? Sacrifice simplicity for ambition? Choices… choices.

You also.

I’m doing ChurroWriMo and I am starting it right now.

I forgot that today was the first of November, but I will make it up tomorrow. My aim is 25k, but I know that I can do more than that. It’s just about focusing, lol.

Suggest names based off these character descriptions:

  • Middle aged businessman who is also streetsmart and he doesn’t take crap. He also likes to have a good time, and he parties away from his wife and kids. He also does sleazy stuff and gets into trouble occasionally. He also likes the fine things in life, and goes out of his way to treat the ones he loves. He’s also good at protecting and providing for them, despite being unfaithful at times.

  • Daughter of a preacher who’s very involved in her church. She’s generally good natured, and kind but can get a bit bored and rebellious at times. She likes to do her own thing and persue her own hobbies in her downtime, and tries her best to restrain herself when she goes out with her friends. She likes the simple life, and thinngs to be uncomplicated. She likes animals, cooking and making music. She is also suprisingly open minded at times.

Thanks  They can be from any ethnicity/religion/country. I don’t mind.

I am working on three novels, two are being written in first person. In two months, maybe less than that, I will be on my second draft of Project Succession.

I honestly came back to get some critique partner or something along those lines.

Writing is going well enough, I am happy to do something in first person after so long.

Since it’s supposed to be dark humor, I thought about what it might be like for a demon to possess a human. This is Glasya, a lesser demon, regretting possession.

Glasya swore like a human sailor, grumbled some words in his native tongue, and deemed humans defective. No wonder his comrades pushed him to reconsider demonic possession last week. He should have listened. This wasn’t what he signed up for. It was utterly impossible and ridiculous and nothing like the ad had suggested.

Even in the demon world, ads could be misleading.
