Speaking of first person being used well, I discovered a new author on Wattpad whose works I really enjoy. Her short stories are mostly in first person, and they’re really good. They’re also really unpopular (like, none of them have cracked 30 reads, and most of them are hovering at around 10–15?) and they deserve more views Check out @/iiingriiidd__

Oh yesss, I did read a couple of her stories and I was stunned. It’s amazing. She used second person so perfectly. I’m definitely planning to read more of her stories later.

That’s why I plan to introduce my future kids to quality literature from a young age. They’ll be less likely to enjoy trash after reading something good.

Third person present? Interesting. I never really liked present tense in a POV not that I’m not open to it, I have partially used it towards the end of one of my short stories, but present tense always feels “incorrect” to me. Maybe it’s because we’ve always been taught to write in past tense. Even my first person is in past tense.

Okay, yes, I remember that was my view on it as well when I was younger! I was like, huh, it feels wrong and it’s so easy to mess up. It almost could feel childish if you’re not used to it. But if it’s done right, it really changes your perspective. I think I started to appreciate it more when our science teachers had us write lab reports (since, you know, the standard is to write in present tense) and I developed my present tense skills. And it’s definitely hard to master since a lot of the forms don’t exactly work and you have to think of a way around it. But I slowly got better and I loved the moments where I got to use my creative genius to figure out a way that didn’t sound weird And I tried using it in stories, and combined with the style, I found that it had such a great effect. It’s awesome. But it depends on the story. Figuring out which POV to use is always a fun puzzle. Certain ones enhance it more. Really depends on the style and mood. I find that it works best with more poetic or formal styles.

Oh yes, I have. Ahem, The Island of the World. There’s a reason I adore that book so much, you know. xD But if you read it, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Oh no, now you’re tempting me to write something in third person present I gotta check online if it’s “correct” though, because I’m scared that I might not pull it off if I try

EDIT: just did a little searching. Apparently, third person present might be hard to read because it doesn’t feel as natural although there were a few books that were published in third person present. I think I’ll just stick to past tense for now

Haha! Yeah, writing in that tense is a harder feat. It’s a challenge, but I’ve seen really good results come out of it, that’s why I love it so much. And I like challenges. xD But trust me, there are ways to make it natural. You should attempt it if you ever feel like it. Maybe as practice. IT WORKS AMAZINGLY WELL FOR DESCRIPTIVE PIECES THOUGH!!! And you’re great at those!

Speaking of omniscient, I think I’m starting to get the hang of it. “Think” is the keyword here there’s like third person omniscient objective, then third person cinematic, and third person omniscient subjective narrator…

Okay, I don’t even remember if I learned all of these. xD I remember objective, yes. I think. Seriously, grammar classes were such a long time ago.

I’m just trying to not head-hop and make for a “strong” narrator, because I heard that that’s one reason why omniscient is distinct. The narrator isn’t a character but has their own distinct voice. I’m still trying to find mine. I’m not sure if I’ve ever written with a strong author voice before, and now I’m trying to write in omniscient… what have I done me, the writer with the weak author voice, is trying omniscient

Also, try doing prose poetry for practice. I feel like that would help develop it. Yes, that combination would definitely work. You’re good at those. Play to your strengths. xD

Thanks! I catch them quickly sometimes, but some errors take a year for me to catch (even though they were simple) when I was rereading Book One just for fun, I realized I used “are” instead of “were”

Oh yeah I had a bunch of those in my older works. And I mean, I even see typos and grammar errors in published books, which are supposed to have editors, so it’s not a rare thing to occur.

Oh I’ve looked up prose poetry, and I was intimidated. I can’t even handle “regular” poetry, I’m still working on prose, and combining the two together? recipe for disaster I can’t even write a sonnet. I’m still stuck on it. It’s the iambic pentameter I can do the pentameter but not the iambic. I mean, I get what they mean by iambic, but how do you determine whether a certain syllable is stressed? It’s hard enough to find rhymes, and now I have to focus on syllables and their stresses

Maybe I will once I finish my current poetry collection and its sequel (yes, I have a sequel collection planned ) and another planned collection of sonnets. After I’m comfortable with poetry, then I’ll tackle prose poetry.
