⚠️ Writing Site Shutdown, Pending Forum Closure ⚠️

Dear Wacky users,

Times are tough right now. We’re all feeling it. Being a part of the Wacky community has been a beautiful and bittersweet experience, especially following the closure of the Wattpad forums in 2020. At the end of last year, I told the team I would be taking a step back from my involvement on the forum, both to focus on my own writing career and to manage things in real life. However, I’ve been continuing to fund the forum and writing site from my own pocket.

We make no money here. We try to limit the amount of advertisements so as not to inhibit the community experience, so our ad revenue doesn’t even hit double digits most months. We do our best not to “beg” for donations, because as a user of other forums, I know how obnoxious that can be.

However:

We are at a crossroads. Personal circumstances have hobbled my ability to single handedly fund the resources needed to keep the site and forum running. I have been unable to work on the main writing website for months, and being the only person managing/updating that side, if you’ve been over there lately, you’ll notice parts of it are broken as a result. The site was a great experiment, and I think it has potential, but the online posting space is very crowded and I can’t justify continuing to fund it.

Therefore, as of March 1st, the writing site at wackywriters.com will be closed.

If you have posted anything there, please accept my sincerest thanks for giving it a try. If nothing else, it was lovely to see some people taking a chance on the project. If you have posted work there that exists nowhere else, please be sure to copy your content somewhere else. I will try to find a way to allow you to export your work easily, but I cannot guarantee it will be possible. I will, however, be taking a backup of the entire site as it exists to maintain for archival purposes for one year. It will just take extra time to retrieve any content if you don’t copy your work now.

As for the forum, we are quickly approaching a similar deadline in terms of revenue. The site only takes up a small percentage of the overall operating costs, whereas the forum is significantly more expensive due to the amount of space (and usable server speeds) we need to maintain. I cannot continue funding the forum out of pocket by myself.

If we do not manage to raise enough money to fund us through the summer, the forum will need to close.

This will be determined by the end of March. If you have enjoyed using Wacky Writers and have a few dollars to spare, you can donate here. This is through Paypal and goes into the account funding the forums directly.

The wonderful mod team is entirely volunteers, most of whom have been here from the very beginning. They have dedicated time and stress and love to this forum in a way that not a lot of people would be capable of, and I cannot thank them enough for their support and hard work to keep this place running. It would have been impossible to do this without them. By all rights, we should not have survived for 2.5 years.

I wish things could be different, and I am sorry it’s come to this. Please know we will be keeping our Discord server and our Wattpad page online, regardless of the outcome. The mods are currently brainstorming ways to keep the community engaged, and still want to maintain our running lists of “team picks” on our Wattpad page. We have planned to consolidate all our writing prompts into a book on the same profile.

Please know it has been an honor and a pleasure to provide this space for so many, and even if we have to bring this era to an end, none of it would have been possible without our user base. So from the bottom of my heart, sincerely, truly, thank you for going on this journey with us. Wherever we end up, I hope to see you all on the other side.

All my love,
CJ

UPDATE: A Gofundme was requested to make donations easier, so you can see that here!

Donated.
I love this community. I want it to go on.

Also, don’t feel bad for asking for funding. I see you as one of us and it’s not fair to expect you to fund our fun.

Let’s all split the bill.

how much does it cost to fund the forum? (just curious)

The server by itself is about $150/month, but that doesn’t include additional occasional things like email, domain names, or extra space. About $175 on average, some months more, some less.

rip that’s so expensive, boo capitalism

No need to feel bad! We knew it would be shut down when the money ran out, but it was great fun while it lasted. You’re super awesome for funding all this at all! Especially when we were all so depressed after the official forums closed. (ɔ˘ ³(ˆ‿ˆc) :heavy_heart_exclamation:애!

It used to be more lol. I downgraded some things last year to try and offset costs. $150-175 is about the absolute lowest I can manage without sacrificing speed or space.

Thank you for everything you’re doing, CJ

And thank you to all our members who spend time with us every day :beautifulheart:

I know I’m not really one to speak, since I’ve been so absent lately, but Wacky really is such a great place for budding writers in search of a community, and it’s meant so much to me over the past 2 and a half years. Of course, things and people change. The world around us has changed, our priorities are shifting. But I think Wacky is worth keeping, so I’ve donated and will try to contribute more of my time to the community :sparkling_heart:

Thank you thank you thank you :coolpineapple:

Gah! I am going to miss this place so much!
I would so donate if I only had the money!

Once this site leaves, I have no clue what other writing forums to go to next. I might have actual time to focus a bit more on making strides in writing and other things.

I had a great time on this site and I will greatly miss it!

Have you considered opening a Ko-Fi account? It’s free and they don’t charge fees for donations. You can connect your Paypal right in there and set a goal and explain what you need and for what.

Anyway, I’ve got measly 2 followers but I figured it won’t hurt to spread the word and posted a public request.

I’m sorry to hear this. If I had enough money, I would genuinely donate to this cause, but at the moment, my bank account is barely surviving as it is :frowning:

Thank you, CJ, and the mods/admins/helpers for everything you have done to make this place a success, and for all of your time spent here keeping the community a safe place (even if I was a bit of a pain in the arse to you guys at times :flushed: Sorry about that).

Thank you for creating this community, and letting us use this as a writing outlet and a place to socialize. And for making a writing space for us to share our creations. WackyWriters has been a wonderful experiment, and it’s a shame that the site is closing.

If I get enough money in March, however, I will be sure to donate. If I had the money now, I would definitely donate and send you something to help keep the forums going. The current financial situation has been difficult for everyone.

I am also glad that you can keep Discord and the Wattpad going, and that the WW Legacy can live on, even on a smaller scale. Thank you everyone for being a friend, and I do hope that we can keep in touch somehow if it comes to an end here on the forums.

This is SO NICE thank you! The mods were throwing around the idea of a Patreon, but I’m not sure what the difference between that and Ko-Fi is.

It’s okay, we all have our days. :joy: I’m sure I’ve been a pain in the ass somewhere too at some point.

That’s very sweet of you. I’m hoping we can find a solution that will allow the forum to continue existing long term.

I’ve never used Patreon. I feel a bit intimidated by it honestly. I chose ko-fi because it sounds a lot less stingy to ask for money with it. “Buy me a coffee” is a very casual request and like you, I was hesitant to ask for anything at all. I’m a nobody after all.

But you never know who’s lurking about. You may or may not have a fan that’s willing to support you but you won’t get anything from them if you don’t make it possible for them to support you.

Sad to hear about this but I guess we all knew it was coming. I would donate if I could afford to lose the money but that’s a bit hard right now  basically I can either donate or I can eat

Perhaps someone could create a discord server or something instead since those are free as a backup in case not enough money comes through? It seems a lot of us are there, too @CJtheSiteWizard

I try not to make decisions for our finances on my own since the spouse is the one who works, and we have our own “funding other things” strains…

But $175 is 18 people donating around $10 a month, 35 donating $5 a month, for every percentage of this you can continue to handle on your own, the number of people needed goes down.

The problem is the first few months after you’ve bled yourself dry need more help than long-term solutions.

I won’t see what our finances are doing until Wednesday.

Should we get to archiving everything ahead of time?
